According to the Department of Posts which is generally refereed as Post Office, as of 31 March 2011, the Indian Postal Service had 154,866 post offices. Indian Post other than being the largest postal network in the world is unique in many ways as it not only provides the postal facilities to every Indian but by exploiting its its dense network in rural areas it delivers various types of financial services such as Post Office Savings Account, Recurring Deposit Account, PPF accounts, Life insurance and many more. The inauguration of India’s first floating post office by the Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology(IT), and Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2011 marked yet another achievement in the history of Indian Post Office.

The special feature of this post office is that letters posted from here will carry a special design which will have the picturesque sceneries of Dal Lake and Srinagar city. The Floating Post Office is an innovation by the Indian post to increase the tourist and provide a unique and tourist-friendly service to the people of Kashmir and to tourist from across the world. It also have a museum and shop to sell the postage stamps and other products to Kashmir people as well as the tourist.
