Bhangarh Fort: Is it really haunted?

If you are one of those people who do not believe in ghosts or love to get scared Bhangarh Fort is the place for you. Bhangarh Fort is located on the Aravali hills in the Alwar district of Rajasthan around 250 KM from Delhi is considered to be the most haunted place in India. There is a belief about Fort that no one dares to go inside the fort after sunset and those who stays have never returned. People often hear strange noises ( screaming, crying voice of women, bangles sound in the rooms) and they reported many weird and scarcely credible incidents like some one’s talking and a special smell is felt. Even the Archaeological Survey of India or the ASI has forbidden the locals and tourists from entering the fort at night and have placed a board that says that entry is prohibited between sunset and sunrise.

Stories behind Bhangarh Fort

There are strange stories linked to Bhangarh Fort and one of the most prominent one is that Bhangarh was cursed by a holy man called Guru Balu Nath who used to live in the surrounding forests. He did not want anyone to know about his special retreat. When asked if he was happy for the construction of the town then he said as long as it does not get too close to him then it should be fine. It is thought that he said these words and laid a curse, “The moment the shadows of the palace touch me, the city will be no more”. But when one of the princes of Bhangarh Fort raised the walls, it restricted sunlight where he lived. This is where the curse comes in play and then the destruction of the town and the fort started.

Another story which is more widely believed and more interesting is that there was this tantrik Singhia who fell in love with the princess Rani Ratnawati of Bhangarh. The tantric desired to marry her but he knew that it was not going to happen. One day Singhia saw the princess’s maid in the market. So he decided to use the black magic on the oil that the maid was purchasing so that upon touching it, the princess would surrender herself to the tantrik. However, the princess saw the Sanghia Tantrik trick that he was enchanting the oil. So the princess poured the oil on to the ground. The oil on ground turned into a rock and rolled towards tantrik and crushed him. Before dying, the tantrik cursed the Bhangarh city to death and said there will be no more rebirths. After this incident, the curse showed its results in a the battle between Bhangarh and Ajabgarh, where Ratnavati was assassinated. However, some local stories tell that the princess has taken a rebirth somewhere else and the Bhangarh fort is waiting for her return and end the sadistic curse.

Haunted or not Bhangarh fort has taken the top position in the list of haunted places of Asia and scary are the stories related to it. There have been instances when tourist have tried to visit the Fort after sunset and the experienced strange things.
